For the first part of this project we conducted twenty in-depth interviews with students on the MSc in E-Learning. Reflecting the geographically dispersed nature of the group, interviews were conducted in Skype.
A narrative approach was taken to this stage of data collection, with the emphasis upon eliciting stories that might provide insights into student experiences of place, space and institution. This storytelling approach encouraged participants to interpret their experiences of being an online distance learner. In particular, participants were asked to describe their 'arrival' at University, where that 'arrival' was entirely mediated via an electronic learning environment.
Each interview concluded with the participant being invited to submit an image to accompany the storytelling that had taken place.
